The Sharda script is an ancient writing system that was historically used in the Kashmir region for writing Kashmiri, Sanskrit, and other related languages. The script was prominent in the region until around the 10th and 11th centuries, when it started to decline due to the adoption of other scripts such as Devanagari. Despite its diminished use, the Sharda script remains an important part of Kashmiri cultural heritage.
Kashmir was also known as Sharda Desh because of the sacred Shrine of Mother Goddess Sharda situated at the confluence of the Krishan Ganga and Madumati rivers in the village of Shardi, now located in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This temple was a center of learning and worship, drawing visitors from across India, including renowned scholars such as Adi Guru Shankaracharya and Swami Ramanuj Acharya. The script and the region played a significant role in the spread of spiritual and philosophical teachings, including Mahayana Buddhism and Kashmiri Trika Shaivism.
Today, Sharda manuscripts are preserved in various research libraries around the world. One notable collection is housed at the Raghunath Mandir Library in Jammu, which was established by Dogra Maharaja Ranbir Singh. These manuscripts hold significant cultural and historical value and are essential for the study and preservation of the Sharda script.
Despite the challenges the script has faced, including destruction by Muslim rulers and the diminishing number of practitioners, efforts are underway to revive and preserve this important aspect of Kashmir's heritage. The two-part series, "Bhaag 1" and "Bhaag 2," provides an opportunity for enthusiasts and researchers to explore and learn more about the Sharda script and its rich history.
