"Doon" is a compelling collection of short stories that explores the loss of collective and individual identities as a result of forced displacement. The book highlights how the geography of a place is intertwined with rituals and traditions, creating human connections and revitalizing languages. Through its poignant depiction of fading cultures, "Doon" captures the sense of loss and the impact on lives.

In one story, young Yusuf is driven by curiosity to uncover the secrets of the forgotten people who once flourished in Kashmir's neighborhoods. His mother's illness compels him to explore the mystery of "Ghar Devta" and its potential to save her, even if it means confronting a forbidden past.

Another tale, "It Was Destined," follows the chilling disappearance of Sujata during her relocation to Jammu. Her dramatic reappearance after three decades leaves her sister stunned, as it reveals a world from which there is no escape. This story weaves themes of treachery, heartbreak, and loss.

Neena's desire to revisit her old home in Kashmir after many years leads to her abduction. Her captor, despite bonding with her over shared language and culture, ultimately remembers his goal of killing her for jihad. Neena wonders if the bedside lamp, a gift from her daughter, is still in her home. Yet, the house no longer feels like home.

Kashinath's sudden alienation from his homeland drives him to embrace dementia as a way to cope with his longing for community life and culture. Though life continues for his son and grandson, each faces their own internal struggles with identity and belonging.

Shireen grapples with her feelings for Vikram, whose presence comforts her. However, circumstances triggered by the events of January 19, 1990, intervene before she can understand and acknowledge her love. Both characters find themselves lost in the haze of these events.
