The situation in Kashmir Valley on 27 October 1947 had got out of hand and the administration had collapsed. The raiders, numbering in thousands, had reached Baramulla in the morning and but for a rag-tag force of handful remnants of State forces, nothing stood between the fanatics and the helpless population of Kashmir. By then, much of Western Kashmir had already been plundered. And it was the day of Eid! And suddenly, as if as a response to the prayers of the locals, angels started to touch down at the airfield just outside the city of Srinagar. Within the next few hours, a small force of braves had made contact with the enemy at Baramulla itself.
