TEMPLES OF ANCIENT KASHMIR

Kashmir has had a rich cultural and spiritual past. Buddhism and Hinduism have thrived here for several centuries. It has seen some great emperors, scholars, and mystics who contributed immensely to its emergence as a centre of great learning and enlightenment. The ancient era, especially between the 8th and the 12th centuries CE, saw the expression of this spirituality in the form of exquisite temples that were built by successive rulers from different dynasties. Kashmir is at the crossroads of mainland India, China, and Central Asia, and therefore, was exposed to a rich blend of different forms of architecture. From which, finally emerged Kashmir's own distinct form of architecture. It is this typical Kashmiri style of temples that can be seen in what is now left of ancient Kashmir.

In this coffee table book, I have tried to give people, particularly those from other parts of the country, a glimpse into these hidden treasures of Kashmir. The Valley is recognized world- wide for its natural beauty - the mountains, the flowers, the lakes, and the snow. However, I would like to invite everyone to come and visit these architectural masterpieces from our shared glorious past. I promise you that it is going to be an enriching experience!
